Learning Hurts the Head

Posted on May 1st, 2007 by gwizazz : integrality gwizazz
In my personal attempt to understand the reasoning behind a so-called "integral" response that is perceived by me as a "violent" response I offer the following thought process for further dialogue. When someone reacts emotionally they appear to be demonstrating a temporary inability to learn. The reason for this is that the process of learning literally hurts the head and/or causes nausea in most people. This could be because pressure builds up in the head due to the presence of adrenline flowing in the body. The body is in "fight or flight" mode and prepares to either defend itself or run away and starts producing adrenaline. Since adrenaline literally causes a "bitter taste in the mouth" if a person is drinking coffee, tea, or some other bitter tasting substance then they may not make the connection between their emotional feelings and adrenalin or other physical issues in their body. Or, the presence of the bitter taste may remind the person to drink coffee thus further exacerbating the person's emotional state. An abundance of catecholamines at neuroreceptor sites facilitates reliance on spontaneous or intuitive behaviors often related to combat or escape. If a particular stimulus is perceived as a threat then an intense and prolonged discharge of the locus ceruleus activates the sympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system (Thase & Howland, 1995). This activation is associated with specific physiological actions in the system both directly and indirectly through the release of epinephrine (adrenaline) and to a lesser extent norepinephrine from the medulla of the adrenal glands. The release is triggered by acetylcholine released from preganglionic sympathetic nerves. The other major player in the acute stress response is the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. The end result of an emotional response is essentially a "flight" from a learning opportunity. If this response is rationalized as an accepted modality of a particular philosophical/psychological/spiritual teaching "system" (like the Integral Institute circa 2007 for example) then a dysfunctional self-referential-only self-replicating golem situation results. In this respect might Ken Wilber have become a type of new-age Dr. Frankenstein? Has "I-I" become a cult that managed to create a type of brain-washing system that effectively inhibits the individual who learns/accepts the system from truly evaluating themselves? I ask this last question because given the above explanation it appears that individuals who have experienced traumatic or emotionally dramatic events fall into the so-called integral "trap" of a limited thought system. Anti-Integral Psychiatry (and/or Psychology)

Posted on May 1st, 2007 by gwizazz : integrality gwizazz
"AIP finds that IP is akin to the integral psychology of Ken Wilber in that he seeks to synthesize a myriad of perspectives by overlaying his own perspective atop the heap." -- Rich Carlson Rich Carlson wrote an article about Anti-Integral Psychiatry (and/or Psychology) that you may find interesting to read. I paraphrase the article here and correct grammatical and typographical errors. In response to an Integral Psychology (IP) conference that took place in mid 2006 Rich talked about the formation of the Anti-Integral Psychiatry/Psychology movement (which he abreviates AIP and I abreviate AIP2 or AIP squared) which suggests that the notion of culture and environment be taken into consideration when studying the psychiatric health of the individual. Rich says that AIP is similar to the anti-psychiatry movement begun in the 1960s by R.D. Laing. He goes on to say that unlike the anti-psychiatry movement AIP will not consider psychiatric functioning the sole result of environmental, family or sociological context. Both AIP and the anti-psychiatry movement see the need to revision the standard sterotyping processes used by most schools of Western Psychology (e.g. the DSM IV diagnostic criteria) in order to determine if the models that they are using are valid in labeling research subjects. The AIP response to IP must be seen in its emergence or second generation which arose in the mid to late 1990s and is now accepted by professionals teaching at such institutions as CIIS, as an accepted modality for therapy. The foundational work of IP entitled Integral Psychology by Indra Sen, is not at issue here. More to the point, AIP can as easily be seen as branching out from the work of Indra Sen as second generation IP. AIP differs from IP in that AIP does not make the pre-assumption that their analyst already possesses, or is necessarily able to develop, a yogic vision in terms of vocational training which enables them to diagnose by detailing the subtle differences between the parts or planes of being from which a psychiatric problem arises. For example, AIP does not assume the conclusion that the psychologist will become an omniscient observer whose flawless yogic vision imparts to them the ability to diagnose maladies originating from occult regions of the psyche as seems to be an implicit claim of IP. In addition the AIP group will also from time to time provide a critique of the notion that Integral Yoga (IY) lends itself to being a helping profession, and present evidence that Sri Aurobindo, who IP cites as their founder, in fact refuted claims that IY was a helping profession. AIP will challenge the view that IP is not constructing an ideology (or seeing through the lens of a distinct school such as Freudian, Gestalt, Jungian). IP maintains that because they are promoting an integral vision (e.g. taking all views and schools of psychology into consideration) that they are not in fact constructing an ideological school. AIP will argue that IP is in fact constructing its own ideology; an integral ideology! AIP finds that IP overlooks the fact that most every credible school believes they are taking all previous perspectives into account but that somehow their own perspective is the most omniscient or suitible to the here and now. In this respect AIP finds that IP is akin to the integral psychology of Ken Wilber in that he seeks to synthesize a myriad of perspectives by overlaying his own perspective atop the heap. AIP acknowledges however, that thus far any distinct IP critical theory or praxis has not emerged which is widely shared by all IP professionals. They all agree on Sri Aurobindo's model. They have yet to systematically detail how the helping profession of IP proceeds from the model of Sri Aurobindo. Neither have they explained how they will be able to discern all the cultural and professional influences which may impact the interpretation they bring to Sri Aurobindo's model. Noting this fact the AIP group also asserts that IP has yet to resolve the contradiction that the discipline IP, whose main concern is abnormal psychology and therapy, can be derived from the discipline IY which concerns itself with supra-normal psychology and the gnostic being. This letter shall serve as an invitation to all interested parties to jump on the AIP bandwagon now before it becomes ideological (tongue half-way inserted in cheek). .

Non-Integral Institute?

Posted on Apr 29th, 2007 by gwizazz : integrality gwizazz
UPDATED: April 30, 2007, 5:30 PM UTC It occurs to me that when some people see the phrase, "Anti-Integral Institute" that they may think that I am against the Integral Institute which is NOT true. I was simply saying that the major proponents of the Integral Institute Pod (I-I Zaadz) here at Zaadz were "themselves" anti-integral or non-integral and that the Integral Institute might more accuratly be called the Anti-Integral or Non-Integral Institute. So, this blog entry is to further explain what I mean by what "I" see as the ABSENSE of "integral" process at the Integral Institute version 2007. There appears to be an interesting distinction at I-I Zaadz where there is the EXPECTATION that literally everyone who is "integral" speaks as if they are ONLY mean green or LL (lower left quadrant) or as if "there is ONLY the 'we'." Somehow they do not seem to get that "expression" can come from ANY quadrant, color, level, line, state, stage, wave, river, stream, ocean, sphere, toroid, galaxy, universe, etc. Simply because the "expression" is singular in nature, or different than mean green (dark green?), does NOT mean that the "person" or the person's psychology is such and to "attack" or otherwise treat the person AS IF they are that singularity is out of integrity. What some people see as empathy other people might see as condescension or patronization. To remove a person from a dialogue simply because they "appear" to come from a different point in the universe is definitely NOT integral. Thinking in terms of "flatland" we could say that the I-I Zaadz Pod Mod Squad (IIZPMS) is only 2 dimentional (misspelling intended). They do not appear to realize that a MUCH greater depth and/or dimension exists in actual reality. The "rest" of the world/universe/color spectrum seems like a massive "gray area" or unknown realm to them. We might graph the current state of the IIZPMS against the overall whole as the singular "pane" or lower left side of a cube. Perhaps we might call this dynamic: The FAR or EXTREME LOWER LEFT or FLL / ELL and represent them as "dark" green. What do YOU think?

NEW! EMPATHY FOR THE SHADOW

The IIZPMS seem to attempt to talk about "the shadow" but they do not keep you around long enough to actually talk about it. They just ASSume that somebody "else" has it and then they kick you out of their pod without any confirmation with the person themselves about it to find out if it is REALLY there. WHERE IS THE SHADOW?

It has been mentioned or suggested that the last three letters of IIZPMS may have an alternative or hidden meaning, "Permanent Menstrual Syndrome." I "empathize" with the women (and the men who are empathizing with those women) who may think that this is insensitive but how can we confront or inquire-into the shadow if we do not bring up these types of issues? Where is the "integrity" or "integrality" of DENIAL?

The word "empathy" comes from the Greek meaning "to make suffer." How appropriate is that?! To "make" OTHER people "suffer" for YOUR imagined reactive reality? Let's be real here. There needs to be a way to have a dialogue about things WITHOUT the "need" or "demand" for empathy, don't you think? Do not people need to "learn" to be LESS sensitive? Otherwise, people seem to tend to use the appearance of the lack of empathy in someone else as an ESCAPE MECHANISM to avoid having a dialogue about a potential shadow. I will update THIS blog entry as I further evolve this particular thought and/or develop graphic represenations of this idea so please check the "updated" date at the top of this message. .

Anti-I (Anti-Integral Institute)

Anti-integral
Updated: April 30, 2007, 6:44 PM UTC
The reason for this blog posting is that people need to learn to use DIALOGUE to transcend their personal issues and NOT physical action. THAT is the lesson of the new millennium.

Arthur Adastra, moderator of the Integral Institute Pod, COMPLAINS that I thrive on conflict which means that he avoids conflict at any cost and therefore avoids transcendence at any cost. Arthur says, "I would encourage people to refrain from engaging with him in any way." and, "Further conversation between us is pointless." Arthur thinks that I am someone from his past which signifies that he has repeated this exact same dysfunctional pattern previously. Why? You can not have a reactive person in a position of power, ESPECIALLY power over the elucidation of "Integral Studies" otherwise you will have neither integrality nor learning. The I-I Pod Mod Squad would rather remove someone who is teaching them rather than teach someone who may need the teaching more than they. The elimination of a problem is NOT the "transcendence" of the problem. The I-I Pod Mod Squad is choosing to take the EASY way out which is the very definition of NON-upper tier modality.

Integral Difficulty

gwizazz said Yesterday, 6:47 PM:

An elitist member of this pod just wrote me a private message chastising me for challenging another elitist member’s position on an issue. When I asked them for an “example” of a Turquoise way of explaining what they were trying to say they shut me down and refused further communication and then they threatened me with removal from this forum for abuse if I even replied to them. Now, they consider themselves a member of the “Turquoise Pod Squad” or whatever so why might they react in such a non-responsive way? Or, do you think that they WERE responding and simply chose a lower meme way of doing it?

I apologize for not giving more specifics but both of these people are VERY reactive and will attempt to have me removed from this pod for simply “inquiring into” this particular dynamic. So, I will not NOT name names or give specifics that may identify either of these two people. They will OBVIOUSLY know who they are so if you see or hear of any ramifications due to “this” message then you will know that something VERY weird and OUT OF INTEGRITY is happening here. A copy of this message is being sent to Brian just in case we need to bring in the “big guns” to handle someone who is over-reactive, and, who has the “power” to physically screw things up.

So, how do we deal with this? The person has refused further communication altogether. Sure, they might change their mind at some point and they may even comment here (more than likely in the third person) as a means of demonstrating that they understand a more subtle aspect of their previosly-demonstrated difficiency or should I say lower color meme? In other words they may say how various memes might deal with this from various other meme perspectives.

Well, let’s see what happens…

The so-called Integral Institute Pod, seemingly the anti-integral institute, just removed me from their Pod after only giving me one warning as to what they considered objectionable and then they never explained "why" it was objectionable. In fact, they called an inquiry-based question an attack. The moderators of that pod are Adastra (Arthur), MaryW, and Pelle. Liz initiated contact with me privately and then complained that I was abusing her. The exchange can currently be seen at: Integral-Meaning-of-Life? Would YOU consider this to be an "integral" action? Your thoughts?
Here are some links for further research into the non-integral Integral Institute: Please let me know if you have any other useful source material on this issue, thanks.

Is it actually possible to be AQAL? I ask because whenever I inquire from an AQAL perspective then someone coming from a specific quadrant or level gets offended and claims altruistic defamation of "character" and ENDS the inquiry with no explanation what-so-ever other than "people got offended"! How can the intentional group-dynamically-arrived-at decision to ban a person from the Integral Institute discussion group (all of them) be AQAL? Where is the on-going dialogue of listening to ALL perspectives? Is this not the effective definition of NON-integral? If the people in charge can not be integral then what is the hope of EVER teaching integral concepts effectively if you keep eliminating the people who are helping you transcend the lower levels?! Sure, people will say that you should not do this intentionally but if that is your level then what choice is there? What good does it do to have demonstrably lower level over-reactive people running the show? They unknowingly end up eliminating all the upper level people. The so-called "Integral" Institute attempts to divide people into colors, quadrants, tiers, lines, levels, etc. and then uses the "lower" aspects of these to rationalize violence and then violently attacks people who point out these types of dysfunctionalities with no explanation or dialogue what-so-ever. Yes, the Integral Institute appears to be a paradox and potentially even an oxymoron, it effectively attacks that which it wishes to be or accomplish. The following video offers hope against such demonic possession... .

Zaadz Dialogue, Life Is More Than What You Think

Posted on Feb 12th, 2007 by gwizazz : integrality gwizazz
For my first article I will simply offer some thoughts relative to the reason that I joined zaadz. After reading a few interesting blog entries and some of their corresponding comments it occured to me that there might be some integral elements that may be missing in the general U.S. population's mindset, even in the most advanced genius-level highly-integrated brains. In my not thinking that I hold the totality of answers I am choosing to confront my assumptions and opinions by putting them out there to be commented upon. I generally follow the guidelines of "Bohm Dialogue" or "Dialogue in the Spirit of David Bohm" and very much appreciate the principles of Spiral Dynamics integral (SDi). I look forward to mind-expanding exchanges with each of you whom choose to participate. .
